Industry welcomes govt’s warship plans

Industry groups have welcomed the government’s plan for a long-term naval shipbuilding sector, saying it provides the certainty lacking under the previous boom-bust cycle of warship production.

Under the plan, announced by Prime Minister Tony Abbott in Adelaide, the government will bring forward construction of replacement frigates and patrol vessels, with new ships to be mostly built in Adelaide, reports Sky News.

Australian Advanced Manufacturing Council chairman John Pollaers said Australia’s advanced manufacturing sector and its future resilience and global competitiveness would be far stronger with the certainty of this program.

‘For many of the 2500 Australian advanced manufacturers already establishing themselves on the global stage, this will be excellent news.”
